The note is done before you sign out.
SimplePractice ships templates and dropdowns. The work of writing the note stays yours. Mediyn drafts the full note from your session - DAP, SOAP, intake, treatment plan - in your tone, modality-aware, ready to sign before the client is out the door.
SimplePractice
Templates and dropdowns. You still write every note from scratch.
Mediyn
AI drafts the final note. Sign and move on.
Client reports significant improvement in sleep quality since medication adjustment last session. Describes reduced frequency of intrusive thoughts, particularly around work-related triggers.
Affect notably brighter - more engaged, sustained eye contact. PHQ-9 score decreased from 18 to 14, now in the moderate range. Client demonstrated strong recall of CBT techniques from previous session.
Current treatment plan is progressing well. Recommend continuing medication at current dose. Assign cognitive restructuring worksheet to build on the thought record work.
PHI is redacted on your device.
SimplePractice is HIPAA-compliant - same as Mediyn. The difference is architectural. SimplePractice sends raw session data to their cloud and protects it with a BAA. Mediyn redacts names, addresses, dates, and identifiers on the phone, before any transmission.
SimplePractice
Raw session data goes to their cloud, then a BAA protects it.
Mediyn
PHI is redacted on the device. Cloud only ever sees de-identified content.
How have you been feeling since we adjusted the medication?
Much better. My mother Sarah ChenNAME noticed I've been sleeping through the night. We moved to 142 Oak StreetADDRESS last month. Next check-in is March 15thDATE.
Claims, ERAs, and eligibility - included.
SimplePractice locks claim filing and ERA posting to higher tiers and charges per-claim fees on some plans. Mediyn ships the full insurance stack - 837P submission, 835 ERA auto-posting, 270/271 eligibility, 276/277 status tracking - on every plan with no per-claim fees.
SimplePractice
Telehealth, claim filing, and ERA are tier-gated or paid add-ons.
Mediyn
The full insurance stack on every plan. No per-claim fees.

SimplePractice's worksheet library is a list of generic PDFs you assign after the session. Mediyn generates a worksheet from what you and the client actually discussed - referencing real moments, real homework, real next steps - delivered the same night.
SimplePractice
A library of generic PDFs. You pick one and assign it.
Mediyn
Worksheet generated from the session. Delivered the same night.
Situation (brief) - Where were you, who was there, what happened?
Automatic thought(s) - What went through your mind first?
Emotions - What did you feel? Rate intensity (0–100%).
Pre-filled: “Your therapist noted you mentioned sleep quality improvements this session - consider tracking your evening routine this week.”
Same HIPAA. Different architecture.
Both platforms are HIPAA-compliant. The difference is what each one's servers handle. This is the factual comparison - from each company's own documentation.
| SimplePractice Note Taker | Mediyn | |
|---|---|---|
| Where session audio is processed | Uploaded and transcribed on their servers | On your device, by default |
| What their cloud handles | Raw audio during transcription; transcript retained up to 7 days | De-identified content only, on the default path |
| Your safeguard | Retention policy - audio deleted after transcription | Architecture - PHI is redacted before upload |
| How you verify it | Stated policy | Every note is labeled with where it was processed |
SimplePractice details from their published Note Taker documentation. A retention policy is a promise; architecture is a fact.

Why therapists switched from SimplePractice.
“Three months in. The thing that surprised me most isn't the AI - it's that I haven't logged into a payer portal since switching. Claims out, ERAs back, ledger updates. SimplePractice charged me for the same thing and still made me do half the work.”
- Dr. Lena Park · LCSW · Private Practice, Brooklyn
“the notes are weirdly good. 90% of what i'd have written, in the right tone. SP was templates pretending to be AI - this is the actual thing. only ask is letting me set a default style per modality.”
- Sam Tucker · LMFT · Solo, Portland
“We had SimplePractice for two years. Telehealth was an add-on, claims were an add-on, eligibility checks were an add-on. Mediyn includes all of it on every plan. Math wasn't close.”
- Dr. Aaliyah Chen · Group Practice Owner · 6 therapists, Austin
What therapists ask before switching from SimplePractice.
Why are SimplePractice users switching now?
In March 2025, SimplePractice raised its Starter plan from $29 to $49 a month - a 69% increase - and many practices reassessed what they were getting for the price. If you're comparing, compare totals: Mediyn's Starter is $39/month ($31 billed annually) and includes AI notes, telehealth, and insurance claims & ERA on every plan, with no per-claim fees.
How long does the migration from SimplePractice take?
About two weeks end-to-end for a typical solo or small group practice. We export your clients, claim history, scheduling data, and templates from SimplePractice and load them into Mediyn. Your SimplePractice account stays read-only for 30 days as a safety net.
Will I lose any client records or claim history?
No. We pull complete client charts, signed notes, and claim status records from SimplePractice's export. You also retain read-only access to SimplePractice for 30 days post-migration in case anything was missed.
Is telehealth really included on every Mediyn plan?
Yes. HIPAA-compliant video on every plan. SimplePractice's Starter tier excludes telehealth and you pay more to add it. Mediyn's lowest plan includes the same telehealth features as our top tier.
Does Mediyn's AI really finish the note, or is it a starting draft?
It writes the final note. We benchmark against a clinician's full rewrite - most therapists describe it as 'sign and move on' rather than 'edit and rewrite.' SimplePractice's AI feature (where enabled) generates a starting draft and you complete it. Different category of product.
What about per-claim fees?
Mediyn covers clearinghouse costs on every plan. Some payers charge pass-through fees for specific transactions; when they do, those appear on your invoice with no markup. SimplePractice charges per-claim fees on multiple plans.
Am I locked into anything?
SimplePractice is month-to-month, so you can leave whenever you want. We recommend running Mediyn alongside SimplePractice for one overlap month (we comp the overlap) to ensure no claim falls through during transition.
Will my clients have to re-register on a new portal?
No. Existing SimplePractice portal users are migrated with magic-link onboarding - they click a link in an email, no password reset, no friction. Clients keep their full appointment history and superbill records.
Your evenings belong to you. Not your notes.
Join the therapists who stopped staying late for documentation and started focusing on what matters - their clients.
